The Soap Box Derby has been around since 1933, but as much as I like cars and racing, this is the first one I've ever attended. The race was held in downtown Rochester, just 1 block off Main St.
The racers start on a mechanical gate that's set on a bit of a slope.
 
Then they pick up speed on a steeper section of the run. And the track levels off before the finish line.
The finish line is equipped with an electrical timing device which times the difference between the 2 cars down to a thousandth of a second.
 
And most of the races are about as close as the one above, so they need that kind of accurate timing. As the cars were lining up to race, this car caught my eye because of the cool name and the very professional paint job. This is the Flewelling family, of Clarkston, and Zack is the driver.
And right behind, the patriotic themed car of Laura & Jenny Sienzak, of Commerce caught my attention. (In case you didn't know it, I like folks who are
